Why Kizomba?

Kizomba is more than just a dance, it’s a feeling. Originating from Angola, Kizomba is known for its slow, grounded movements, deep connection, and hypnotic rhythms. It’s a dance that emphasizes partnership over performance, making it incredibly rewarding for beginners.

Reasons to fall in love with Kizomba:

  • Connection-focused: Learn how to move with someone, not just beside them

  • Stress-relieving: Let go of the outside world and immerse yourself in the music

  • Accessible: No need for flashy footwork — it’s all about quality of movement

About Ezra Smollan

Ezra Smollan embarked on his dance journey in 2007, majoring in Choreography/Movement Studies at WITS University, where he immersed himself in contemporary dance and physical theatre. Since then, he has participated in numerous performances, with appearances at the FNB Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg and the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Transitioning into Ballroom and Latin dance, he both competed and taught at provincial and national levels before honing his expertise in Argentine Tango, as well as Salsa, Bachata, and Brazilian Zouk. In 2012, he discovered Kizomba—a dance that resonated deeply with him—and has since dedicated himself to mastering and teaching it. His Kizomba career has included teaching with international Kizomba starlet Patricia Cardoso, running open classes all over Gauteng, and founding his school A Vida Kizomba. He has also taught, stage managed, and performed at various international SBK festivals both locally and abroad, including in Mozambique, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and other destinations. In recent years, Ezra has also entered the world of SBK DJing under the name DJ Ezmeow and has performed at and run several SBK parties and Weekenders in Gauteng and KZN.

Teaching Style:
Ezra’s teaching philosophy extends beyond mere step patterns; he prioritizes cultivating the essence of the dance—the connection between leader and follower—while emphasizing refined technique, cultural and historical context of the dance and the authentic feel of movement. His syllabus and teaching strategy is focused on his students being comfortable and enjoying their dance experiences on any Kizomba dance floor.
